Palliative Care is specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness. This type of care is focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of the illness. The goal is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and the family. It is an extra layer of support based on the individual needs of the patient (and the family), NOT the patient’s prognosis. It is appropriate for any age and any state of illness and it is provided along with curative treatments.
Pediatric Palliative Care is family-centered. It helps with communication and coordination of care. With the close communication that palliative care provides, families are better able to choose options that are in line with their values, traditions, and culture. This improves the well-being of the entire family. It is best to start palliative care as early as possible. This benefits both the child and the family.
Palliative care is something many people misunderstand. It is a sensitive and specialized medical care for those living with serious but not necessarily life-limiting care. It is care focused on providing relief from emotional, spiritual, physical, and mental health concerns.
Palliative care is for people of ALL ages: Infants through adults.
